Janet is a former executive who, after a serious illness undertook a ‘sea change’.
Following her recovery she was introduced her to a porcelain doll maker by her mother, arousing in her an interest to know more about the process of doll making. This interest subsequently led to sculpting her own dolls, despite no previous art background.
Shortly thereafter, she was commissioned to sculpt a life size "portrait doll", for a child in Italy. During this process Janet decided to seek help to develop her technical skills in order to accomplish the results she sought. In 1999 she joined The Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, which teaches sculpture in the tradition of the studio/school, using traditional modelling and carving methods.
During her first year of study (as a part-time student) her work was recognised as unique and she was invited to participate in a womens only sculpture exhibition, "Women in Sculpture" held in the ABC. She has also exhibited in the annual student exhibitions held at the sculpture school.
In 2004 while still a participating student she accepted the schools invitation to become a part-time teacher. Today she also teaches from her studio. While still using traditional techniques to create her sculptures she has also brought new ideas and commercial products to her sculpture creating many benefits for her clients with indoor and outdoor pieces.
Artists Statement
In my past life I was a business executive; now in my next life I’m a sculptor. A student of life.
I do not know how I came to sculpture as I never did art at school. Perhaps it’s better to say that sculpture came to me. For me sculpture is food for the soul; it nourishes, invigorates, challenges & nurtures, humbles & inspires; it returns you to your very essence.
Inspiration for my pieces come from all around: a leaf or seed pod, the play of light and shadow on an object, a glimpse of something from the corner of my eye, a face, a painting or just a feeling of something waiting to be discovered.
To try and take something as intangible as a thought or a feeling and create a 3dimensional interpretation of that is the challenge and the reward. Whether they be figurative or abstract they should be from the heart and give pleasure to the senses.
